World
Heritage Cruise - 10 days
Take time out from the rat-race
to tour the Natural
World Heritage Site, the Belize Barrier Reef, and experience some
of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere in the world!
The
Barrier Reef was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because
it contains "superlative
natural phenomena and areas of exceptional beauty and aesthetic importance,
and contains the most important and significant natural habitats for threatened
species. "

"The coastal area of Belize
is an outstanding natural system consisting of the largest barrier reef
in the northern hemisphere, offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays,
mangrove forests, coastal lagoons, and estuaries. The seven sites included
in this serial nomination illustrate the evolutionary history of reef
development, provide spectacular underwater scenery, and are a significant
habitat for threatened species, including marine turtles, manatee, and
the American marine crocodile."
Bacalar
Chico National Park & Marine Reserve, located on the northern portion
of Ambergris Caye, is characterized by a reef with high relief spur-and-groove
formations, a double reef crest in the north, patch reefs, and sea grass
beds. It is noted for its deep water conch population, and spawning ground
at Rocky Point for Nassau and yellowfin groupers.
Half
Moon Caye Natural Monument, located at the southeast corner of Lighthouse
Reef Atoll, was created in part to protect the Red-footed Booby bird and
its rookery, which it shares in apparent harmony with the Magnificent
Frigate Bird and almost a hundred other species of birds.

Blue
Hole Natural Monument lies within the Lighthouse Reef and is a geological
cave formation surrounded by a circular rim of coral reef. The Blue Hole
is a large, circular sinkhole with a diameter of about 318m and a maximum
depth of 125m. The cave, with many large stalactites, was made famous
by Jacque Cousteau and is now Belize's most popular dive site.
Laughing
Bird Caye is a shelf atoll with deep channels located near Placencia
Village in Southern Belize and was named for the huge flocks of laughing
gulls that nest there. The scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities are
outstanding.
Glover's
Reef Marine Reserve Glover's Reef is the southernmost of Belize's
atolls, and one of the best developed in the Caribbean. It is approximately
32 by 12 km and lies 45 km east of the mainland coast. It is surrounded
by a fringing reef that has only 3 channels, all in the windward side.
The clear oceanic waters have permitted coral growth to depths of 100m
or more. Over 700 patch reefs stud the central lagoon.

South
Water Caye Marine Reserve is located in the central province of the
barrier reef and patch reefs, faros, sand bores, seagrass beds and over
20 sand and mangrove cayes. Endangered species such as sea turtles and
American crocodile find suitable habitat within the reserve.
Sapodilla
Cayes Marine Reserve is located on the extreme southern end of the
barrier reef, forming a J-shaped hook with fourteen sand and Mangrove
cayes dotted along the sides of the reef. These cayes are surrounded by
fringing reefs with extensive spur-and-groove formations extending eastwards
and contain scattered coral patches.
